WELCOME
I’m Bobby White and this is my website. I am a Goalkeeper for the Great Britain Handball Team currently training for the 2012 London Olympics. My story is an interesting one as I have only been playing Handball since January 2008.
I, along with seven of my team mates, was selected from over 2500 athletes that applied for the 2007 Sporting Giants Talent Identification Programme (TID) which was led by UK Sport and the English Institute for Sport. After a series of fitness and skill based trials I was eventually offered a full time contract starting in January 2008 at a sports academy in Denmark where I would join the existing GB squad members. The aim of the programme is to create a competitive Handball team to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, targeting a top eight finish.
Since joining the programme there have been many ups and downs, including my first international match in Oman in October 2008 and the uncertainty surrounding the programme funding from UK Sport. The news of a significant reduction in our funding has meant immediate changes to the set up of the programme and at this point the programme is evolving significantly in order to maintain our steep learning curve in our quest to become recognised competition to the top handballing nations by 2012.
